About Ian
Qualified Public Access Barrister

Ian is a qualified Public Access Barrister which means that in some circumstances he can be instructed directly by you without the need for a Solicitor.

Ian was called to the bar after achieving a 1st class honours degree in law, along with 9 prizes and awards including the best student in any field of study. He also obtained the Woolfson scholarship from Lincolns Inn to help him further in his studies.

Following completion of his studies in London Ian returned North and now practices from Parklane Plowden Chambers in Leeds and Newcastle.  Ian’s roots are in the North-East - an area he is passionate about.

Ian practices solely in civil law (and does not deal with criminal or family law).  He appears frequently in the County Court (and regularly in the High Court and Court of Appeal), and is renowned and respected for the ability and experience that he brings to cases.

Although Barristers are frequently in Court not all cases have a significant impact upon the development or clarification of the law. Such ‘higher profile’ cases are ‘reported’ in formal law reports enabling these ‘legal precedents’ to benefit all the legal profession - now and in the future.  Ian has been involved in a significant and substantial number of such ‘reported’ cases which reflects the volume of work he undertakes (due to the level of demand for his services) as well as his ability and the quality and breadth of his experience. For a full list and further details of Ian’s ‘reported’ cases please click here.

Ian has been described by the solicitors he undertakes work for as “extremely capable;” “dedicated” and “tenacious,” and he will provide clear, comprehensive and impartial advice to all his clients.  ‘Success,’ or a positive outcome can never be guaranteed but Ian will act in accordance with the Bar Code of Ethics which, amongst other things, assures you that he will:-

  • Act in your best interests
  • Listen to you
  • Be discrete and confidential
  • Provide honest and informed advice
  • Be committed

In simple terms, if Ian thinks you are wrong and likely to ‘lose’ he will tell you so in clear terms and look for ways to extricate you from the problem in the most advantageous way. If you are right, he will fight ‘tooth and nail’ to achieve the right outcome.
